(YAC = Young Adult Carers)
There are currently 61,051 YAC aged 16-17 in the UK, with 11,341 of these shown to be caring for more than 20hrs per week,
even more astonishing is the fact that 4,406 YAC are caring for more than 50hrs per week.
There are 229,318 YAC aged 18-24 in the UK providing care for more than 20hrs per week with a further 27,000 YAC providing 50hrs per week.
Making the total of YAC aged 16-24 in the UK today 290,000.
Research shows that there are not enough services available in the UK to meet the needs of this vulnerable group.
This research is supported by a recent study carried out by Fiona Becker & Saul Becker of Nottingham University and published by The Princess Royal Trust for Carers in association with Young Carers International Research & Evaluation;
highlighting the current issues YAC face in today's society. The concerns raised by the report were the need for more specialist support services for YAC,
focusing on the transition from young carer to adult carer.
Following this research CSM have developed a YAC project that provides support, information and advice to YAC living in the borough of Merton.
The YAC project can provide the following support services;
• Education, Employment & Training
• Benefits Maximisation
• Emotional / Family Support Planning
• Carers Act Assessments
• Counselling / Befriending
